Breaking Barriers in Real Estate Marketing: A Conversation with Krista Whitelock

“It’s 2025. The old boys' club is overdue for change.”

From small-town roots in Prince George to leading marketing for one of Canada’s most dynamic real estate developers, Krista Whitelock has built a career defined by creativity, perseverance, and a passion for building community.

As the Vice President of Marketing at Anthem, Krista oversees marketing programs across a diverse portfolio that spans Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Sacramento. Since joining Anthem in 2016, she’s guided over 40 projects, co-led two rebrands, and grown her team from just four members to 28, a transformation that reflects both Anthem’s growth and Krista’s leadership.

We sat down with Krista to learn about her journey, her perspective on the industry, and what drives her both personally and professionally.

A Journey Fueled by Curiosity and Courage

Krista’s path into real estate marketing wasn’t linear. After completing her BCom at UVic, including a final semester spent studying and working in Austria, she set her sights on three passions: music, sports, and real estate. When opportunities in the first two proved scarce, she leaned into networking and persistence, eventually landing a role at Polygon Homes through a connection she made over coffee.

That first role set the stage for an adventurous career. Krista spent time travelling and working abroad, including living in a van in New Zealand for four months and getting married in Italy, before returning to Vancouver to expand her experience at companies like Solterra Development and ParkLane Homes, where she helped launch The Block, a boutique townhome project that pioneered a digital-first approach that was ahead of its time. Krista also spent time at MAC Marketing and as a consultant for several leading developers.

When Anthem came calling, Krista jumped at the chance to join a company in growth mode. “I started as Marketing Director with a small team and a residential portfolio that was still in its infancy,” she recalls. “It’s been incredible to help shape our brand and culture during such a pivotal time.”

Building Homes, Brands, and Communities

For Krista, real estate is about much more than selling homes. “It’s a unique industry where I can blend creativity, strategy, and leadership,” she says. “We’re not just shaping projects, we’re shaping the experiences that define communities.”

She’s particularly proud of the relationships she’s built over the years, both with her team and the industry at large. “A home is the biggest investment someone makes in their life,” she explains. “It’s a privilege to be part of that journey.”

That people-first philosophy extends to her leadership style. “I’ve learned that leading people is completely different than leading projects,” Krista reflects. “My team is brilliant — much smarter than I am — and I learn from them every day.”

Pushing for Progress in the Industry

When asked what she’d change about real estate, Krista shares her bold vision for the future.

  • Fix the System: “Slow approvals, high costs, and inconsistent policies are blocking attainable housing. The system needs a reset with creativity and coordination at every level of government.”
  • Increasing Diversity: “It’s 2025. We need more women and diverse voices in leadership roles. The old boys’ club is overdue for change.”
  • Recognizing Marketing’s Strategic Value: “Marketing shouldn’t be treated as a cost center. It’s essential for shaping how projects connect with people and drive results.”

Lessons Learned and Advice for Others

Over the past nine years at Anthem, Krista has navigated a rapidly evolving market, including the challenges of a pandemic and a volatile economy. Her key to success? Adaptability.

“Marketing today is about creating authentic, human experiences,” she shares. “From discovery centres to community events, it’s about helping people envision not just a home, but a life.”

Her advice to others pursuing a career in real estate.

  • Ask for what you want. “If you don’t ask, you don’t get,” Krista says, crediting this principle for much of her career growth.
  • Build your network. “Find mentors, connect with peers, and don’t be afraid to reach out. Those relationships are invaluable.”
  • Be bold. “Trust your instincts and take risks. Your ideas matter.”

Life Beyond the Office

When she’s not shaping brands and communities, Krista’s life is equally full. She and her husband, Jimmy, are raising two active kids on the North Shore, where weekends are packed with hockey, soccer, dance, and gymnastics. A classically trained pianist and abstract painter, Krista also serves on the Board of the Gordon and Marion Smith Foundation, fostering appreciation for the visual arts.

Whether at home, at work, or in the community, Krista’s passion for connection and creativity shines through, making her a true leader to watch in the real estate industry.
