Provincial - Labour Shortages in the Construction Industry
The Skilled Trades Training Council is requesting information to help support the case for additional funding from the Province for additional construction trades seats. As a result, we wanted to reach out to the UDI membership for some data on the additional costs of construction arising from labour shortages.Â
It would be best to focus on specific examples of projects where there have been delays due to labour shortages that resulted in additional costs, which can be framed in response to the following:Â
- Identify one to three projects where labour shortages led to construction delays and higher costs. If possible (but not required), select projects that are/were funded (even in part) by the BC government.Â
- For each project, if possible, provide the following:Â
- A brief description of the project.Â
- The initial estimated construction costs for the project.Â
- The final, actual construction costs of the project (and the difference between the two).Â
- The initial, estimated date of completion of the project.Â
- The actual, final date of completion of the project (and the difference between the two).Â
- Information around the nature of the labour shortages and how those shortages led to the construction delays.Â
- Information on how the construction delays led to higher costs.Â
- Any other information that may be relevant. Â
If you are not comfortable sharing company details, this information may be shared with the Province, so please let us know if you need it anonymized.Â
Please provide feedback to policy@udi.org by the end of the day on Tuesday, July 22nd.Â
