On July 24, as the Province considered the 2027 Annual Allowable Rent Increase (AARI), UDI submitted correspondence outlining that the rising operating costs facing rental housing providers are exceeding allowable rent increases. UDI recommended basing the AARI on CPI plus 2%, along with various improvements to support a simpler Additional Rent Increase (ARI) process.  

The letter also noted the need for the Province to review the broader rent regulation framework in light of changing market conditions, including rising vacancies and declining rents. 

On August 26, the Province responded, outlining that UDI’s submission will help inform ongoing discussions on housing policy. Nevertheless, on August 27, the Province announced it will maintain the AARI at 2.2% (inflation), despite UDI recommendations.
