City of Vancouver - Jumpstarting Rental Housing: Bold Action to Boost Rental Housing Construction in Tough Economic Times

At their meeting on June 18th, Council defeated a motion that proposed exploring a property tax abatement program to support the delivery of new rental housing. The motion called for staff to report back on the design of a potential program that would temporarily defer property tax increases on sites redeveloped for rental housing, holding the tax rate at pre-redevelopment assessed values for a defined period. UDI submitted the following letter regarding this motion.
