City of Vancouver - Garbage Disposal Motion

February 13, 2026

As mentioned in previous updates, the City has confirmed that Vancouver has not implemented a ban on garburators. Currently, it remains the developer’s choice whether or not to install garburators in new housing developments.

For background, on July 9, 2025, Council directed staff to report back with draft Vancouver Building Bylaw amendments for a potential garburator ban in new construction. After reviewing the issue, staff recommended not proceeding with a ban. Instead, they recommended prioritizing higher‑impact actions identified in the City’s Healthy Waters Plan and continuing to support existing green bin collection programs, which are backed by a communications approach that highlights environmental and waste-diversion benefits.
