City of Coquitlam - Unsightly, Vacant, and Derelict Building Enforcement Approach
At Council-in-Committee on April 20, Council received a report for information on the approach to managing unsightly, vacant, and derelict buildings in Coquitlam, and outlined the specific measures that staff will implement to facilitate safe, visually appealing communities. The focused measures are proposed as follows:
- Clear expectations and early notification to property owners – providing early notice that properties must remain secured, maintained, and compliant at all times during transition phases;
- Formalizing cross-departmental coordination – monitor workflow for higher-risk and transitional properties, and
- Structures proactive inspection and oversight – shifting oversight from complaint-driven to a scheduled compliance model by conducting ongoing monthly inspections of properties identified as higher-risk and transitional.
City staff intend to implement the measures immediately and are targeting completion by T2 of 2026. More information can be found in the full report by City staff.
