City of Burnaby - Universal Water Metering Strategy

On December 2nd, Council approved the Universal Water Metering Strategy to move towards more sustainable water management in Burnaby. The intent is to reduce water demand among residents.

Since July 1st, 2024, all new commercial, multi-dwelling buildings and single/two-family dwellings have been required to install a water meter per building prior to occupancy. As a next step, staff recommend installing meters for homes with a water service connection that can fit a meter. Staff also recommend prioritizing meter installation on existing homes with secondary suites.

Staff will prepare to return to Council with a billing transition strategy to be adopted effective January 1, 2027. More information can be found in the full report by City staff.
