City of Burnaby - Construction and Demolition Waste Diversion

At the Environment Committee on October 20, Council approved for staff to undertake engagement on the updated Construction and Demolition Waste Diversion. The following amendments are proposed for engagement with interested parties:Β 

  • Increase the current diversion requirement for single and duplex homes, multifamily buildings and non-residential buildings from 70% to 90%;Β 
  • Increase current diversion target for accessory buildings/structures (e.g., garage, shed, etc.) from 70% to 80%; andΒ 
  • Require lumber salvage as follows:Β 
  • A minimum of 3.5 kg or 2.6 board feet of dimensional lumber per finished square foot of floor space be salvaged during the demolition of single and duplex homes built prior to 1950 for reuse; Β 
  • Payment of a refundable deposit of $7 per square foot of the home being demolished to a maximum of $18,000;Β 
  • Submission of a Lumber Salvage Plan; andΒ 
  • Submission of a Lumber Salvage Compliance Report and original receipts (e.g. weight bills, etc.) to be submitted within 90 days after completed demolition.Β
