  • Building upon the success of UDI’s annual Development Master Class, the RED Management Certificate Program has been developed by local real estate and development professionals from around British Columbia who possess a wealth of experience and expertise.Β 

    With their insights and guidance, this nine-month course offering aims to bridge the education gap by equipping learners with the practical knowledge and strategic insights needed to effectively manage real estate development projects from inception to completion.

  • The program is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the entire real estate development process, covering a wide range of activities, issues, and responsibilities associated with successful project management.Β 

    Through a combination of theoretical concepts, case studies, and practical applications, participants will delve into key topics such as site selection, feasibility studies, project financing, entitlements and approvals, design and construction, marketing and sales, and much more.

  • Participants have the option to take each course individually, according to their specific interests and needs, or to pursue the complete program to earn the prestigious UDI Capital Region RED Management Program Certificate.Β 

    This enables professionals to tailor their learning experience and acquire the specific knowledge they require to enhance their careers in real estate development.

  • Introduction to Pro Formas is one of nine courses within the RED Management Certificate Program offered by UDI Capital Region. This course is designed to help participants improve their pro forma writing skills, ranging from beginner to more advanced levels, by working through various project scenarios.

    Throughout the course, participants will be introduced to the vocabulary, definitions, and key concepts related to pro formas. They will gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals of pro formas, including their inputs and functions in real estate development.

    This course begins with a general overview and walk-through of a typical pro forma, before delving deeper into the complexity of pro forma writing, adding layers relating to rental and leasing, as well as incorporating BC Housing and CMHC programs into the pro forma.

    By completing this course, participants will gain proficiency in pro forma writing and develop a better understanding of the financial structure of real estate developments. Whether beginners or more advanced learners, participants will enhance their pro forma skills and improve their ability to analyze and evaluate the financial aspects of development projects.   • Securing Land is one of nine courses within UDI Capital Region’s RED Management Certificate Program, focusing on the process of finding, evaluating, and securing a development site. Led by experienced industry professionals, this course equips participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the complexities of land acquisition.

    Learners will explore strategies for identifying potential sites, considering factors such as location, market demand, and zoning regulations. Through practical examples and case studies, participants will develop the ability to conduct feasibility studies and assess a site’s value based on market demand and financial viability. The course also emphasizes effective negotiation practices, including building strong relationships with landowners and brokers. Participants will gain insights into the legal and administrative procedures involved in finalizing land acquisitions, ensuring a smooth transition of ownership.

    By the end of the course, participants will possess the expertise to make informed decisions, negotiate effectively, and secure land for successful real estate development projects.

  • Concept Development is one of nine courses within UDI Capital Region’s RED Management Certificate Program, focusing on assessing the market and leading the creation of a winning concept. Led by experienced industry professionals from various regions in British Columbia, this course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the concept development process.

    Participants will explore the basic typology of development types, gaining insights into the various categories and their defining characteristics. They will learn how to analyze market trends, demographics, and demand to assess the viability of their development concepts.

    The course emphasizes the importance of refining concepts to enhance their feasibility and market appeal. Participants will acquire strategies to optimize designs, layouts, and amenities while considering sustainability, community engagement, and market differentiation.

    Participants will learn principles to effectively articulate their vision to stakeholders such as investors, community members, and decision-makers.

    This course empowers learners to lead concept development processes and drive innovative and impactful real estate projects in a competitive industry.

    Throughout the course, participants will learn how to structure financing for several types of projects, understanding the unique requirements and considerations associated with each. They will gain insights into identifying potential sources of funding, evaluating the risks and benefits, and developing effective strategies to secure financial support.

    Participants will learn how to effectively communicate the value proposition of their project to lenders, investors, and other stakeholders. They will be introduced to the financial models, business plans, and presentations that demonstrate the feasibility and profitability of their development ventures.

    By completing Managing Project Financing, participants will be ready to prepare to navigate the intricacies of securing financing for real estate development projects.

  • Law and Development is one of nine courses within the RED Management Certificate Program offered by UDI Capital Region. This course is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the key legal contracts and issues associated with real estate development. Led by industry professionals from BC, this course covers a range of essential topics related to real estate law.

    Throughout the course, participants will delve into the intricacies of various legal contracts relevant to real estate development. They will gain insights into consulting contracts, agreements with municipalities, and other crucial legal agreements that form the foundation of successful development projects. Participants will learn how to effectively negotiate and draft these contracts, ensuring their projects are legally sound and well-protected.

    The course also explores the management of legal conflicts that may arise during the development process. Participants will learn strategies for identifying and addressing legal issues, as well as techniques for resolving disputes and minimizing potential risks. They will develop a strong understanding of the legal frameworks and regulations governing real estate development, enabling them to navigate legal challenges with confidence.

  • Planning and Approvals is one of nine courses within the RED Management Certificate Program offered by UDI Capital Region. This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the planning and approvals process for real estate development projects. Led by experienced faculty members, this course covers a range of strategies and processes to lead a project through a successful approvals process.

    Throughout the course, participants will delve into the intricacies of the approvals process, including OCP (Official Community Plan) amendments, zoning regulations, development permits, variances, subdivisions, and other permits, such as regional growth boundaries, and heritage approvals. They will gain insights into the technical and political aspects of the municipal approvals process, understanding how to effectively navigate the requirements and regulations set by local authorities. Participants will learn strategies for engaging with municipal officials and regulatory bodies.

    By completing Planning and Approvals, participants will be equipped with a map and an understanding of the many issues associated with managing a project through the complex landscape of planning and approvals. With guidance from experienced faculty, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the strategies and processes involved in securing the necessary approvals for real estate development projects.

  • Technical Studies is one of nine courses within the RED Management Certificate Program offered by UDI Capital Region. This course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the various consultants involved in the real estate development process and their role in signing off on projects. Led by industry leaders, this course covers a wide range of expert consulting work that the approval process often requires, including but not limited to architectural, landscape architectural, arborist, environmental, archaeology, civil engineering, and heritage.

    Participants will gain insights into the importance of engaging consultants in these specialized fields to ensure compliance with regulations and best practices. They will learn about the stages and scopes of work, specific requirements and considerations associated with each area of study.

    Throughout the course, participants will explore strategies for effectively collaborating with consultants, managing their input, and integrating their recommendations into the development process. They will also gain an understanding of the potential challenges and opportunities that arise when collaborating with multiple consultants.

    By completing Technical Studies, participants will possess the knowledge to manage a team of consultants through the real estate development approvals process. With guidance from industry leaders, participants will gain the expertise to effectively manage and integrate the contributions of technical consultants, ultimately leading to successful project outcomes.

  • Community Relations is one of nine courses within the RED Management Certificate Program offered by UDI Capital Region. This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively create and manage community relations plans for real estate development projects. Led by experienced instructors, this course covers a wide range of strategies and techniques for community engagement. Participants will learn the importance of community engagement in the development process and gain insights into effective strategies for fostering positive relationships with the local community. They will explore techniques for planning and conducting successful community meetings, utilizing online communication platforms, and managing the reputation of the project.

    The course also emphasizes the importance of building and maintaining community support throughout the development process. Participants will learn how to effectively communicate with community members, address their concerns, and develop strategies to gain their trust and buy-in. Moreover, the course covers the preparation for public hearings, including understanding the regulatory and legal aspects, as well as techniques for presenting the project and responding to community feedback.

    By completing Community Relations, participants will be able to construct effective engagement plans to navigate the complexities of community relations in real estate development. With guidance from experienced instructors, participants will be well-prepared to manage community relations and foster positive relationships throughout the development process.

  • Marketing, Sales, and Leasing is one of nine courses within the RED Management Certificate Program offered by UDI Capital Region. This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage the marketing, sales, and leasing process for real estate development projects. Led by industry leaders, this course covers a comprehensive range of topics to guide participants toward successful project conclusions. Participants will learn strategies for hiring and working with marketing consultants to develop effective marketing campaigns that highlight the unique features and value propositions of their projects. They will gain insights into targeting the right audience, implementing marketing strategies, and maximizing exposure through various channels.

    The course also focuses on the sales and leasing aspects of real estate development. Participants will learn techniques for collaborating with realtors and leasing brokers to attract potential buyers and tenants. They will explore effective sales and negotiation strategies, understanding the art of closing deals successfully. Throughout the course, participants will develop an understanding of the marketing, sales, and leasing process, and the critical role it plays in achieving successful outcomes. With guidance from industry leaders, learners will be prepared to effectively manage these processes and drive successful project conclusions.

    In addition, this course offers the bonus of an introduction to the transition from design and approvals to the construction industry – provided by an experienced expert in construction and a representative of the Construction Association.
